PEOPLE IN BUSINESS

The Bozeman Business and Professional Women recently recognized its award winners for the year.

    Jacki McGuire of McGuire and Associates was named BBPW’s Employer of the Year. McGuire has been running her own tax preparation/ accounting firm since1993. She earned a bachelor’s degree in math from Kalamazoo College in 1972, then attended accounting classes at Montana State University, passing the certified public accountant’s exam in 1992.

Chrissy Frank was recognized with BBPW’s Young Careerist award. Frank has been in residential/ commercial lending for more than 10 years, specializing in new home loans, refinances and commercial loans. Frank is a lender at First Security Bank.

Bozeman BPW’s annual Woman of Achievement award was presented to Pat Simmons. Her 40-year career began after receiving her bachelor’s degree in finance from Colorado University, then she became the first woman commercial loan officer at a major bank in Denver. She continued in finance and telecommunications, retiring as associate director of Montana State University’s Information Technology Center.

Sally Broughton wins Woman of Achievement award from Bozeman BPW on April 21, 2009. She is a teacher at Monforton School who has made a significant impact on her community and school. She has been recognized for outstanding qualities in teaching her seventh grade students in Social Studies and Civics, developing an innovative Project Citizen curriculum. She currently teaches Social Studies and Civics and is the Student Council Advisor and Peer Mediation leader. She chairs the Social Studies Curriculum Committee, is the MEA-MFT representative, and is the lead teacher for Montana Indian Education. The variety of her student’s accomplishments is impressive: accomplishing implementation of a safe path to school which included students counting traffic, surveying vehicle drivers and students, developing alternatives, raising funds for the project including getting a donation of asphalt to cover the path, testifying before local county commissioners, who passed a policy directing the road department to construct the path. Through the process, the students developed skills in math, public speaking, research, writing, interviewing, technology, working together, and art.
Other accomplishments include a bike helmet policy, a community playground built with the help of the students, public support for a much-needed new jail, restrooms in the downtown area, early warning and safety measures at a nearby dam, a competitive track program and mandatory community service as part of the k-8 curriculum. In 2008, the National Learn and Serve Corporation selected her class to receive the Spirit of Service Award for “Operation Save the Playground”, winning this honor over 1000 Learn and Serve programs in the United States.
In addition to her classroom responsibilities, Sally has been a state coordinator for the Center for Civic Education’s “We the People Program” resulting in more schools in Montana using these award winning programs. She serves on professional committees and associations which have helped Montana teachers do their jobs better. She has been an award winning social studies teacher for the last 20 years. Her honors include receiving the national American Civics Education Teacher Award from the Center on Congress, National Conference of State Legislatures and Center for Civic Education. As mentioned above, she and her class received the National Learn and Serve Corporation’s Spirit of Service award. She is one of three teachers selected for the 2008 American Civics Educator Award memorialized in the July 14, 2008 Senate Congressional Record. And, this year, she has been recognized as the 2009 Montana Teacher of the Year. On Tuesday, April 28th, 2009, she received the Montana Teacher of the Year award from President Barack Obama in Washington DC.

Kathleen Chafey originated from Arizona and has dedicated the past 30 yeas to improving public health and education in Montana. Kay earned a B.S. in Nursing, an M.S. in Public Health Nursing, and a PHD in Developmental Psychology, with an emphasis in moral development. Throughout this time she served two years in South America with the Peace Corps, advanced her skills as a staff member with the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, and engaged in multiple public service programs. Kay has earned numerous accolades including the Betty Coffey  Award for the development of a woman-centric academic program, the Jo Eleanor Elliott Leadership Award, and has received over 12 million dollars in grants to support initiatives for women. Currently serving as President of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Kay continues to dedicate her knowledge, experience and skills to helping women advance in education, business, athletics and public service.

Individual Development

BPW's Individual Development program (IDP) is a great way to learn negotiation, communication and leadership skills. The program is also designed to help conquer the fear of public speaking. Members critique one another's skills and offer supportive, constructive advice to help participants improve in these areas.

Equal Pay Day

Each spring BPW sponsors a program to bring attention to BPW's number one issue: Fair Pay. Due to the gender wage gap, working women currently earn 73 cents compared to the dollar earned by their male counterparts and BPW is working to eliminate this inequity.

Young Careerist

For the young professional just starting her career, this program helps "rising stars" build the skills needed to advance their careers. From leadership skills to management techniques, BPW's Young Careerist program empowers young women between the ages of 21 and 35 to succeed in today's workplace. National Business Women's Week

Held during the third week in October, this national event celebrates the achievements of business and professional women around the country. Bozeman BPW holds a special program meeting featuring a notable speaker.
